1. Chin Chin Labs
49-50 Camden Lock Place, London, NW1 8AF
The Times nominated it as the best ice cream parlour in England. The Observer named it as the future of ice cream. Their classics are Pondicherry Vanilla, made with loads of real vanilla seeds and Valrhona chocolate that does taste like rich frozen chocolate with 80% of cocoa in it. The other flavours vary seasonally, so you’ll never get bored here. The toppings are suggested depending on your order and are equally creative. The choice range from caramel, chocolate or raspberry sauces to candied pretzels, honeycomb, grilled white chocolate, to popping candy or fizz powder in the vials.
2. Dri Dri Gelato
189 Portobello Rd, London W11 2ED
Dri Dri occupies a beach hut-style venue at Chelsea Farmers Market, though you won’t spot many wellie wearers among the well-heeled patrons. Gelato is kept carefully covered in metal cylinders sunk deep into the counter, which help retain the texture of the ices but make it considerably more difficult to choose a flavour. Luckily, helpful and enthusiastic staffs are on hand to ply you with tasters before you take the plunge.
3. La Gelatiera
27 New Row Covent Garden, London WC2N 4LA
Anyone can cook up crazy flavour combos, but it takes a true master to really make them work. Somehow, the guys at La Gelateria manage to not only wow with blends like ‘basil and chilli’, ‘Cornish blue (cheese) and walnuts’, and their signature ‘honey, rosemary and orange zest’, but to do so using all-natural, low-fat ingredients. They even pasteurise their own dairy on-site. Now that’s cow-mitment.
41 Old Compton St, London W1D 6HF
At this London branch of a US chain, Amorino delivers high quality Italian gelatos in the most romantic way: shaped like a flower. Using natural ingredients, it’s possible to add as many flavours as you wish in your gelato flower, as long as you ask for it in a cone. With a pleasant setting, the patient staff that will let you try as many flavours as you like before deciding which ones to go for. The shop is also home to over 40 different kinds of hot chocolate and other goodies!
5. Udderlicious Ice Cream
24 Earlham Street, WC2H 9LN
It's summer all year at this dinky Islington ice cream parlour owned and run by a husband-and-wife team. Popular flavours include chocolate and peanut butter and dark chocolate sorbet with sea salt. They also run a competition for customers to come up with the ‘flavour of the month’ – previous gold medallists have included strawberry and basil (still popular), rhubarb and fig, and chocolate and pretzel. They’ve opened another parlour in Covent Garden for doubly deliciousness! P.s check out their whopping ice-cream cakes…
